Marlene Jones-Wallace
Ballet

A native San Diegan, Ms Jones Wallace was a Principal Dancer with the California ballet company for 10 years.

She was best known for her performances as Swanhilde in Coppelia, Giselle and Sugarplum Fairy in the Nutcracker.

She gained recognition throughout the dance world as a finalist in 1974 at the 7 th International Ballet competition in Varna, Bulgaria professional division.  She was a medal-winner at the First Tokyo World Ballet Concours in 1976.

In 1978, she joined Charles Bennett’s First Chamber Dance Company of New York and toured nationally.  She was also guest ballerina with other companies such as Sacramento Ballet and Vasili Sulich’s Las Vegas Dance Theatre.

During her reign as California Ballet Company’s leading ballerina, Marlene danced every principle role of the diversified CBC repertoire, receiving acclaim for her quickness, strength, aerial work, and versatile interpretation of comedic and dramatic roles.

After seeing her in Charles Bennett’s historical ballet Visitation, visiting Romanian dance authority, Oleg Danovsky, said, “She deserves every bit the title; Prima Ballerina.”
